First C&C:Ancients Imperial Rome game…

December 4th, 2009 Earthquake Posted in Ancients, Commands and Colors: Ancients Comments Off

Wednesday night saw the first outing for the fourth installment of C&C:Ancients, as we played the Nisibis battle from the Imperial Rome expansion. We also gave the ‘campaign’ game a try, and played the scenario over 3 days, although we managed to get only two of the three battles fought on the night. The result? Honours [...]

Sticking in my sleep…

November 18th, 2009 Earthquake Posted in Ancients, Boardgames, Commands and Colors: Ancients Comments Off

I’m now the proud owner of all six boxes of Commands & Colors: Ancients (original plus 5 expansions) – something I’ve been on the edge of doing for quite some time now. If you’ve read this blog or listened to the podcast before, you know that I love this game. However, there was one aspect of [...]

Romans

September 4th, 2009 Tim Posted in Ancients, DBA, Taking Stock Comments Off

This is the first of my Early Imperial Roman DBA Armies. I have enough to do three full armies – complete with all possible options… and enough of everything BUT the Legionaries (Blades) to do two more!? I think before doing any more Romans I’ll probably do some Early Germans to oppose them!

The army has an option of a Cavalry or Blade General, four Blade (Legionnaires), four Auxilia, a Cavalry and an Artillery stand, then either an additional Calvary, Light Horse, Psiloi, or Bow stand.

(Click on the picture to see a larger version)

The army is almost exclusively made of old Citadel Minatures from the 1980’s. These were produced under license by Ral Partha in North America. The General on the Calvary General Stand is from Old Glory, and the Artillery stand is, I think, from Minifigs. My friend John got them in a trade last year when he decided to off-load his15mm Great War stuff, then subsequently traded them to me for painting futures (I have completed one unit of Cuirassier for him thus far and, I think, agrees to paint three or four more…).

As mentioned above I have enough to do a few more armies - at some point I'd like to do a Roman campaign - maybe revolving around a civil war - with a couple roman armies and a couple others (Germans, etc) that might either capitalize on the unrest to pick away at the empire or ally themselves with one of the various roman factions... But that won't be for a while!

FINALLY!

September 4th, 2009 Tim Posted in Ancients, DBA, Painting Update Comments Off

I finally finished up the last three stands of blades for my DBA Early Imperial Roman Army!

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

These, again, are old 80’s Citadel miniatures.

I tried taking the pics out back again but this time not in the full sun.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I’m going to try and get some more pictures of the entire Roman army up soon. In terms of painting projects I’m going to stray from the schedule a bit and do some other stuff just for fun… then some descent minis for john that have been haunting my hobby room for over half a year, then I’m going to launch back into so stuff required for upcoming campaigns – I think I’ll start with either the Irish or Normans – as they have the least number of figures to finish off their armies… then we’ll get on with the English followed by some Welsh or Scotts and then perhaps another Viking army…. But that’s almost getting to the new year… so… things might change…

SOA Battle Day 2010 – An alternative approach

August 20th, 2009 Earthquake Posted in Ancients, Shows / Conventions, Society of Ancients Comments Off

As The Other Partizan draws closer, and the time for putting in my order for my 6mm Republican Romans approaches, I have a sudden urge for a reality check (maybe the continued daily victory of not pre-ordering the new Space Hulk is having other effects…) You see, the trouble is that, as always, my annual painting [...]

Macedonian Hypaspists

August 19th, 2009 Fire at Will Posted in Ancients Comments Off

The 6th edition army lists allows two options for the Hypaspists, either as phalangites or as shown here as Light Medium Infantry. I have created the maximum allowed in the list, 36 figures to give me maximum flexibility. I have split them into two units one with armour the other without.

The figures were all from the latest HaT set covering the Hypaspists and Macedonian command (not yet reviewed on PSR). Unfortunately they are in the new soft plastic which means the figures flex quite a lot so I'm worried about how long the paint will stay on.

More Macedonian Oddments

Continuing the tidy up, here is some more figures I picked up on the B&B to boost my Macedonians

All Zvezda ( or Italeri) figures Greek cavalry in front, Thracians behind.

Badgers, Artillery, and Horse-girls…

August 6th, 2009 Tim Posted in Ancients, DBA, Hordes of the Things, Painting Update Comments Off

Just a couple odd things rolling off the workbench…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Some Giant Armoured Badgers – these will be “Beast” Stands for one of my Dwarf Armies. I think they may be WOTC D&D minis.... but I’m not sure.

This is one of those easy-to-paint and done just to get them of the workbench and lower the number of “things unpainted” rather than something I really needed done…

Attempting to stay focused and finish an Army before moving on here is the Artillery stand for my Early Imperial Romans. Unlike most of the others, these, I believe, are old Minifigs… One Light Horse and three Blade to go!

This was actually painted ages ago but not properly based. I had originally ordered four to make two stands of Riders for Amanda’s “HOTT Chick” army, but only three showed up. I held on hoping that number four would arrive but I have more or less given up and decided to base this one singly for skimishy-gamin'. Maybe some day I’ll try ordering direct from Shadowforge - because they are really cool minis…

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Despite my desire to stay focused and finish off my Romans I’m probably going to switch gears and crank out some Anglo-Danish for CVT as he will be in town next week and it’d sure be nice to get these off my table and send them home with him!!

Amanda's borrowed a copy of Rome: Season Two off a friend from work, so after the Anglo-Danish I'll definitely finish off the Romans!!

SOA Battle Day 2010 – Of Time, Space…and Practicallity

August 5th, 2009 Earthquake Posted in 6mm Gaming, Ancients, Impetus / Basic Impetus, Society of Ancients Comments Off

As I’ve put together the two armies for Zama, there is one thing that I can’t get away from – this battle is potentially big, really big. We are looking at 2700+ Infantry, 200+ Cavalry and 18 Elephants – Even in 6mm, this is going to look a very impressive sight. But are things getting out of [...]

Oh Dear….

August 4th, 2009 Tim Posted in Ancients, DBA, Painting Update Comments Off

So, RAFM was having a sale on their 25mm ancients…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

I now have enough squirreled away to make FIVE different Successor DBA Armies. I already had the better part of three of them, and the beginnings of #4 and #5… but I needed a pile of more phalangists and Elephants (the Elephants I already picked up from The Sentry Box). There’s also enough to make a Skythian army, A Thracian army, any Early German army, and a Classic Indian or Graeco-Indian army (less the chariots)… I even picked up a few packs of Indian Palace Guardswomen and some Skythian Noble Women Archers to add to Amanda’s “HOTT chick” army!

They were $4.50 per pack of 6 foot or 3 mounted who could resist!? I mean that’s how much they were in 1990 when I bought my FIRST DBA army – which was a mix of the very same RAFM (and some Ral Partha) minis… in fact here’s a couple of the RAFM ones I still have:

Not exactly up to today’s standards… but I like to keep them around to see how far I've come... They were supposed to be Later Achemenid Persians….

I don’t even want to count up how many this is and add it to my tally because it will be far too depressing… I’ve also had a moratorium on further figure purchases for the next year imposed (fair enough, I went a little overboard here…). I won’t actually be painting any of these until the new year… and I have not shortage of things to paint… so…

SOA Battle Day 2010 – The Carthaginians

August 4th, 2009 Earthquake Posted in 6mm Gaming, Ancients, Impetus / Basic Impetus, Society of Ancients Comments Off

So, having dealt with the Romans, it’s time to deal with Hannibal’s army at Carthage. As with the Romans, the exact number of Hannibal’s troops at the battle is open to some speculation, but I’m pretty happy to go with the general consensus, which is 36,000 Infantry and 4,000 Cavalry – plus 80 war elephants. This [...]

SOA Battle Day 2010 – The Roman Forces

August 3rd, 2009 Earthquake Posted in 6mm Gaming, Ancients, Impetus / Basic Impetus, Shows / Conventions, Society of Ancients Comments Off

So, time to think about how many figures I need for this game of Zama for next year. This may seem strange, but since I’m recently new to massed battle games (being a skirmish game junkie) I’ve never actually put an army together before based on the historical forces – it’s all a but of a [...]

Back on Track…?

August 2nd, 2009 Tim Posted in Ancients, DBA, Painting Update Comments Off

Well long enough to finish up the Cavalry General option…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The General himself is from Old Glory (I think…). The cavalrymen, as with most of the other Romans thus far, are old 80’s Citadel miniatures that were produced by Ral Partha in North America.

Still have three Blade, a Light Horse, and the Artillery to do…
